NEET PG Counselling Guide for MD/MS, DNB & Diploma

NEET PG counselling allocates postgraduate medical seats across MD, MS, DNB, and Diploma courses in government, private, and deemed institutions. The process is competitive and rule-heavy; small errors in choice filling or documentation can delay admission by a year.

NEET PG counselling overview

After NEET PG results, eligible candidates register on the MCC portal for AIQ seats and on state portals for state quota seats. Counselling includes security deposit payment, choice filling, seat allotment, reporting, and subsequent rounds including stray vacancy where applicable.

MD/MS vs DNB vs Diploma

  • MD/MS: Broad postgraduate degrees in clinical and non-clinical specialties at medical colleges.
  • DNB: Hospital-based training accredited by the National Board; compare hospital volume and exam pattern with MD/MS routes.
  • Diploma: Shorter focused programmes; useful for specific career plans—verify long-term goals and superspeciality pathways.

MCC counselling and deemed/private options

MCC conducts counselling for AIQ seats, deemed universities, and central institutions per the current information bulletin. Private colleges participate through state or MCC channels with separate fee and bond structures. Read college-specific bonds and service obligations before locking a high-fee choice.

Choice filling strategy

  • Order choices by career goal, not only perceived prestige.
  • Balance “dream,” realistic, and safe options across rounds.
  • Factor bond duration, stipend, hostel, and location for five years of training.

Seat conversion and upgradation

Understand when you can upgrade, what happens to your security deposit if you decline, and reporting deadlines after allotment. Missing reporting typically forfeits the seat and may affect future participation rules.

Documents required

  • NEET PG scorecard and admit card
  • MBBS degree certificate and internship completion proof
  • Registration certificate (MCI/NMC state council)
  • Category certificate, ID proof, and photographs as per counselling notice

Common mistakes

  • Listing too few choices and getting allotted an undesirable seat
  • Ignoring bond and penalty clauses at private institutes
  • Confusing DNB hospital accreditation with personal career preferences
